SP Poly 50-part 2

As a working full time and also taking part time degree, it is quite a challenge for me to train. However i try to train myself at least 1 hour once i reach back home. Normally after my school i will reach home around 10.30pm.  I quickly settled everything, start changing my gear and it is around 11pm. I will usually run around the park near my house. Even if the park light is off training still have to go on.

I am not an expert of running or sprinting. Usually i will train with my poly 50 teammates once per week. If i cannot train with them i will train on my own after school. This is how I usually train:

When i train at the park behind my house:

1 Long stretch=600m
600m x 6 (Target to hit 3min and rest time is 3min)

Train at poly track:
400m x 12 (Target to hit 1min30sec, rest time 2min)

When you set your number of rounds to run ,do not reduce it. For example if i set 12 rounds do not reduce to 11 or 10. You can increase your rest time but not the number of rounds. In addition never increase the target timing per round. You can reduce the target timing but not increase.

Progressive training is up to your ability but eventually you have to keep increasing the rounds for conditioning. Up to your ability means knowing how many times you can hit the timing you set. If you think that you can hit 6 rounds for 1min30sec, just stick to 6 rounds. However you have to remember every training you need to increase your rounds. Training means you have to push yourself, if you keep running for 6 rounds for past 2 weeks then what for you train. Furthermore you know that your competition is endurance based, jolly well increases the rounds you run.

Target timing is for us to hit and you have to hit it. People say "try" here, "try" there and "try" everywhere. If we say "try", it means you are also trying to cheat yourself. I remember one of my teammates from SAFSA dragonboat told me, imagine you are drowning in the sea and you cannot swim, the first thing you will do is to quickly get some air from the surface. Your mind will never tell you to try to get some air because you are in a desperate moment and you will push everything you have to get some air. I have accounted drowning moment in the pool before. I was training with my scout friends for basic lifesaving course. When i swam half way, my leg started to cramp. The depth of the pool is quite deep and i kept struggling for air. I keep holding my friends shoulder but they cannot withstand my weight. Luckily my instructor rescue me and pull me out from the pool.
I am using drowning as an example because will you try or will you push all the way you have to reach to the surface for air? I will push all the way to hit my target timing and not let "try" factor to cheat myself. This way i can improve myself and condition myself better.

Never short change yourself and train as if you really need it not because you are trying to achieve something.

SP Poly 50-part 1

I graduated from SP for around 4 years and SP have this annual event called POLY 50. You will need to form a team of 10 runners-7 males and 3 females. You have to complete 50 rounds and it is a relay competition. There will be 3 stations and you have to switch runner from station to station. In addition you have to sprint one station to another station, to make this difficult every year they will start around 3pm and the weather is still quite hot and humid. When I am still a student of SP I joined all the Poly 50 competitions under Team CLS (Chemical and Life Science). First year and last year of my poly days my team managed to get into top 10 for student category. After graduated from SP and went into army I still carried on running for Poly 50 under the alumni category. Honestly speaking, the Alumni category have stronger competitors and my team (CLS alumni) team have always emerged top 3 for alumni category for the past 3 years (2013-2015).

Every year i get up the stage to receive my medal, the VIP will say wow such a big size guy and still able to run and my answer will always say YA. Poly 50 is purely endurance based training and you need to train yourself progressively. You have to sprint even when you know that your lactic on your calf and your leg have started building up.Below are some of the pictures of my poly 50 moments:

When I started joining Poly 50 most of the people who knew doubted me. They say you so fat can run meh!! Poly 50 very Shiong one leh must be fit fit leh. Every comment that they say the more I wanted to Challenge myself. Size does not matter whether you are able to endure this race but is your heart and mental to tell you push on. During the start of every poly 50 training period, I will get damn dizzy or weak. However it is my mental to push me on and i keep improving myself every single training. If I miss training, I will train on myself and condition myself.

People give up because they say the race is too long or is very tiring. However they never want to try and say all this demoralizing words. Honestly training is tough but tough get going. If we don't feel the pain in training we will never get used to the pain during the competition. I cannot always depend on my team mate, that is why i keep pushing myself every single training and make sure I don't lack behind. I am not any professional runner or any TeamSG runner I based on my own ability to push myself harder in the training I have set by myself. Big size like me really need a lot of afford to get use of my body weight when I start sprinting and running. At first it is quite tiring but after a few trainings you will start to get use to your body weight.

Remember you must get used of the pain in order to push yourself further and higher.

Let me introduce myself

Hi all this is my very first blog that i am writing in blogspot. Let me introduce myself, I am Tan Bao Ren (陈保仁). Most of my friends make fun of me and called me guarantor(担保人) but I am not a guarantor. Joke aside, I wanted to create this blog to show you that if bao can do it so can you. I am just a normal average guy, who is working full time job and studying part time degree. I consider myself fat because my height is 1.77m ,weight is 93kg and my BMI is above 27.5. I always think that I am big size (大只)or big bone (大骨)to make myself feel more comfortable. However I AM FAT and i have to face this real hard reality.

People always say you fat cannot do this you fat cannot do that. I will show you what i am able to do with the weight that I have now. I am not encouraging you to stay fat for your life, you still have to cut down your weight because you will feel better, healthy, less prone to getting diseases such like high blood pressure and stroke.

Please do not get upset about yourself because YOU ARE FAT, i will show you what I have achieved over the years and I hope that I can inspire everyone who is reading my blog. I will give some advise and tips on how can you improve yourself in terms of physical training and achieve better result in IPPT and the race that you will be joining. I am not an expert or professional trainer, whatever I train is based on my experience and it work for me hope it work for you too.
